Śpiewaczka

Maciej Klimarczyk

Keynote
As a singer she became a star, but murder
was her greatest aria. Why did she do it
and, more importantly, why did she let
herself get caught?

Selling Points
 A blood-soaked thriller, full of suspense
through the very last page.
 An original, surprising work of fiction:
from the beginning we know who the killer
is, but we don’t know why she’s killed.
 Klimarczyk, as a psychiatrist, paints an
exceptionally precise psychological portrait
of an unstable murderer.
 Several subplots build a uniquely
fascinating setting out of contemporary
Polish society.
 The author is well known in the media.
 The plots of several operas flesh out
the background, including, importantly,
Puccini’s Tosca.

Description
Eliza Kantecka, a talented opera singer,
carries out a terrifying plan: in cold
blood she murders a bookseller, Witold
Kruger, an acquaintance of hers. But
she doesn’t try to cover up her crime. In
fact, just the opposite – after four hours
she calls the police, intentionally not
hiding the traces of the murder she’s just
committed. She pretends not to know
what’s happened, hoping to be declared

insane. What motive did she have? What’s
driving her? Will this strategy save her
from punishment?
Klimarczyk, a career psychiatrist,
dives deep into his protagonist’s mind:
he depicts the psychology of lies,
the mechanisms of evil, the genesis of
delusion. We watch along with him as
Kantecka skillfully adapts to her situation,
getting along with the other inmates and
toying with the doctors. Will she spend
the rest of her life behind bars? The expert
witnesses aren’t sure – and neither are we,
the readers…
“The Singer is an excellent, unique thriller.
High in suspense, it’s unnerving and
unpredictable. Each page leads us straight
to the shocking finale”.

“Maciej Klimarczyk expertly guides us
through the world of a complicated
human psyche, fragile and dangerous,
prone to ecstasy and influence. We’re
immersed in the passion and drama,
observing the carefully mapped processes
that, twisting and turning, lead us to
the desired truth”.
Olga Kowalska, Wielki Buk
“The Singer is a performance that blisters
with suspense from the first moment
through the very last page. Lying and
manipulation play the main roles. As
the audience of this spectacle, we follow
the arrest and the psychiatric hospital
from behind the scenes. We take part in
interrogations, research, analyses. Along
with the prosecutor and expert witnesses,
we delve deep into the human psyche,
coming to know its darkest recesses”.
