Sławomir Mrożek

Sławomir Mrożek (1930–2013) was
one of Poland’s most famous dramatists,
the author of many short works of
prose, and an illustrator. Known around
the world for his absurdist humor and
philosophical perspective on human
nature, his most well-known plays
(performed on the stages of contemporary
theaters on every continent) include
Tango, The Slaughterhouse, The Emigrants,
and Love on Crimea. His story collections,
including The Elephant, Wedding in
Atomville, and Denunciations, have become
permanent additions to the canon of
Polish (and global) literature. Mrożek’s
autobiography, Balthazar (written as
a form of autotherapy following a stroke
and the aphasia it led to), and his Journals
(published since 2010) have enjoyed
unusual popularity among readers.
He emigrated from Poland in 1963,
moving first to France, then the United
States, Germany, Italy, and Mexico – to La
Epifanía ranch, where he lived from 1989
to 1996 . He returned to Poland in 1996,
eventually leaving for Nice in 2008, where
he died in 2013.
