Roma Ligocka

(b. 1938) is a Polish writer and painter of Jewish origin. She was born in Krakow, into the Libing family, and she took the name Ligocka in the Krakow ghetto during the war. After the war she lived for many years in Poland, working as a costume and set designer in numerous European theaters and opera houses, and for film and television, after which she emigrated to the West, where she began her show business career. Watching the Spielberg film Schindler’s List, she recognized herself as one of the child protagonists – a girl dressed in a red coat. This experience inspired her write the bestselling autobiographical novel The Girl in the Red Coat (translated into twenty -two languages, screen adaptation copyrights sold to Hollywood), in which she described her memories – not only from the wartime, but also from the 1950s and 60s, in the artistic environment of Krakow, with her cousin, Roman Polański, as one of the protagonists. Her other books include the novels A Woman on a Journey (2002), Myself Alone (2004), and four volumes of articles: The Acquaintance in the Mirror (2006), All for Love (2007), Sensitivity and Indifference (2009), and The Moon over Taormina (2011). Her book The Rose: Pictures and Words (2010) is a beautiful handbook to the author’s paintings.
